Iata praises Mr Lee for being ahead of his time
KUALA LUMPUR: The International Air Transport Association (Iata) yesterday praised Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew's unique vision and leadership in founding one of the industry's strongest airlines and one of the world's most efficient airports.
The international trade body, which represents 230 airlines, lauded Mr Lee's contribution when it presented him its third Global Aviation Leadership Award (GALA), at its annual general meeting here.
Iata director-general Giovanni Bisignani said Mr Lee was ahead of his time in being committed to air services liberalisation and free market principles in the running of airlines from as early as 1972, the year Singapore Airlines took flight.
These basic commercial freedoms are 'absolutely critical today' and what the airline industry 'desperately needs', Mr Bisignani said.
'We all wish that more leaders shared Mr Lee's vision and deep understanding,' he added.
Iata also produced a short video to show how Mr Lee had overseen SIA's growth into one of the world's major carriers, by insisting from the start that it be competitive and self-supporting, or be shut down.
Changi Airport's development was also highlighted, including the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore's receipt of various Iata Eagle awards for excellence.
The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore won Best ANSP (Air Navigation Service Provider) in this year's Iata annual Eagle Awards which are conferred on airports for outstanding performance.
