Mr KHAW Boon Wan
Mr Khaw Boon Wan was re-elected as a Member of Parliament in September 2015. He represents the Sembawang Group Representation Constituency (GRC) and is currently the Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and the Transport Minister.
In his previous portfolio as the National Development Minister, Mr Khaw ramped up the HDB construction programme to re-balance the housing supply and demand. Through a series of cooling measures, he stabilized the housing market and achieved a soft-landing of the market. He also introduced a number of housing policies to help newlyweds own their first flat early and to be able to live close to their parents. Singles too are able to buy new 2R HDB flats. He has also reduced the waiting time for those awaiting a HDB rental flat. Through various policy changes, public housing remains accessible and affordable for all Singaporean families.
In his current appointment, Mr Khaw seeks to enhance public transport and make it possible for Singaporeans to embrace a car-lite lifestyle. This requires public transport to be accessible, reliable, convenient and affordable. Singapore is not there yet but is steadily working towards such an outcome. Mr Khaw also promotes walking and cycling as a green, sustainable and healthy lifestyle. A walkable City in a Garden will raise Singapore’s quality of life, besides protecting the living environment. This will build upon his earlier work in MND and make Singapore an endearing home.
Mr Khaw graduated in Australia under the Colombo Plan Scholarship. Since graduation, he has devoted his entire life to public service. In October 2001, he entered politics and was elected as a Member of Parliament in the Tanjong Pagar GRC.
Mr Khaw was born on 8 December 1952. He is a Buddhist and married with three daughters and 2 grandchildren. He is a vegetarian.
