Malay Speech

Saudara-saudari sekelian

Terima kasih.

English Speech

Friends and residents, I am very happy to be celebrating Hari Raya Aidilfitri with you here together in Cheng San CC. I have attended quite a number of Iftars this year and I am sure during the course of Ramadan we would have met several times – at the Reviving the Kompang Spirit event, PA Mass Iftar, and Kebun Baru and Cheng San Iftar. I was always encouraged by the spirit of camaraderie and compassion that I met amongst the members of the Malay-Muslim community. It is the same spirit that has helped to build a harmonious and peaceful multi-racial, multi-religious society and it is the same spirit we are celebrating this jubilee year.

50 years ago, we became independent and 50 years later today, we are celebrating our journey together. It has been a very exhilarating journey; one which the Malay-Muslim community has participated fully in and I would like to pay tribute to the grassroots leaders and community leaders for their commitment and dedication. Many of them have served a long time and quite a number are pioneer grassroots leaders. Today, we have 50 pioneer generation grassroots leaders across Ang Mo Kio and Sengkang West here to celebrate with us. I think that is cause for us all to rejoice together.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the residents of Ang Mo Kio and Sengkang West because you have supported us, supported me, my colleagues, your grassroots leaders and each other in Ang Mo Kio and Sengkang West. We have built this into a happy, harmonious, warm and friendly town where we all belong together and live harmoniously together. Without your support and encouragement, we would not be where we are today. I hope that you will continue to give us your strong support so that together we will build a better nation and better homes for our families, our children, and our future generations!

Happy Hari Raya, happy SG50 and may we have many more happy years to come in Singapore. Thank you very much!
