SM Goh Chok Tong to visit the Union of Myanmar (8-11 Jun 2009)

Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong will visit the Union of Myanmar from 8 to 11 June 2009.

 

Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong will visit the Union of Myanmar from 8-11 June 2009. SM’s visit is at the invitation of Myanmar Prime Minister General Thein Sein, who had extended the invitation during his introductory visit to Singapore from 17-18 March 2009. SM, who last visited Myanmar in 1998, will use the visit to update himself on developments in the country.

SM will visit Nay Pyi Taw, where he will meet and be hosted to lunch by Prime Minister GeneralThein Sein. SM is also scheduled to call on Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe. Besides Nay Pyi Taw, SM will also visit Yangon, Mandalay and Taunggyi to better understand developments in other parts of Myanmar.

SM will officiate at the opening of the Kayin Chaung Station Hospital. This is part of Singapore’s post-Cyclone Nargis recovery assistance for Myanmar. The hospital project, which was started by Myanmar, was recently completed with Singapore’s assistance.

SM will be accompanied by Minister for Manpower Gan Kim Yong, Government Parliamentary Committee Chairman (Foreign Affairs & Defence) Michael Palmer and senior officials.
