PM Lee Hsien Loong at the SG50Kita National Day Observance Ceremony

PM Lee Hsien Loong | 8 August 2015

Speech by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at the SG50Kita National Day Observance Ceremony on 8 August 2015.

Friends and fellow Singaporeans,

50 years ago we set out on a journey to build Singapore. We were determined to build a multi-racial society, where every citizen is equal, regardless of race, language or religion. It was why we left Malaysia. It was the fundamental reason for Singapore to exist as a nation.

From then on, we built our nation together starting with the pioneer generation going on to the next generation and now really one and half generations after that into the third and then the fourth.

Against all odds, we have succeeded. We built a harmonious multi-racial society. We have nurtured self-reliance and mutual support and we have kept the faith between the Government and the people. Together, we have journeyed from Third World to First. That is why, today, we can be happy celebrating SG50.

So it is important and significant that today the Malay/Muslim community have come together to take lead and organise this national day observance ceremony. And also involved other self-help groups as well from the other races – CDAC, SINDA, Eurasian Association. It shows the success of our multi-racial society. It shows that our minorities are confident of their place in Singapore, and proud of our nation. It shows that all of us stand together, as Singaporeans, celebrating SG50 together, and making Singapore succeed, as one united people.

Long may we continue to be successful. Long may this peace and harmony continue and long may we go forward as one united people. Onward Singapura which is what our national anthem means - Majulah Singapura!

Thank you.
