My Parliamentary Colleagues
Ladies and Gentleman
Good evening. Salam hormat semua. It is my great pleasure to join you this evening at the Hari Raya Light Up 2026 here at Wisma Geylang Serai.
As we gather in this vibrant precinct, I am reminded of the rich tapestry that makes Singapore truly unique – our ability to celebrate together as one people, regardless of race or religion.
Geylang Serai: Heart of Our Malay Heritage
Geylang Serai holds a special place in Singapore's story. For generations, this precinct has been the heart of our Malay and Muslim community. From the bustling markets of yesteryear to the modern Wisma Geylang Serai that stands before us today, this area has preserved and nurtured Malay culture, language, and traditions.
Walking through these streets, one can hear the melodic sounds of the Malay language, smell the aromatic spices from traditional kitchens, and witness the warmth of gotong-royong – the spirit of community cooperation that has always defined our Malay heritage.
Celebrating Unity in Diversity
But Wisma Geylang Serai is not just a geographical location; it is a testament to the enduring strength of Singapore’s multicultural society.
Take tonight's light-up ceremony and the accompanying bazaar as an example. Here, we see families of all backgrounds coming together – Chinese uncles sampling rendang, Indian aunties bargaining for baju kurung, and Malay families sharing their festivities with neighbours of every ethnicity. This is Singapore at its finest.
Our diversity is a strength to be celebrated. When we light up Geylang Serai, we illuminate not just the physical space, but the bonds that unite us together as Singaporeans. The colourful lights reflect the many hues of our society, each distinct yet harmoniously blended into one magnificent tapestry.
Ramadan and Hari Raya: Building Bridges
The holy month of Ramadan and the celebration of Hari Raya offer profound lessons for all Singaporeans. Ramadan teaches us about self-discipline, empathy for the less fortunate, and the importance of community. These values transcend religious boundaries and speak to our shared humanity.
During Ramadan, we witness families breaking fast together, communities organising charity drives, and neighbours looking out for one another. These acts of compassion and solidarity strengthen our social fabric. They remind us that regardless of our individual beliefs, we share common aspirations for peace, prosperity, and harmony.
Hari Raya, with its emphasis on forgiveness, renewal, and celebration, brings communities together in a spirit of joy and reconciliation. The open houses and the exchange of warm greetings and other traditions have become part of Singapore's collective heritage, embraced by all communities.
Our Shared Future
Our diversity is a competitive advantage in the global marketplace. It allows us to better connect with partners worldwide, understand different markets and cultures, and innovate through the fusion of different perspectives and traditions.
But beyond economics, our multiculturalism is the foundation of our social resilience. In an increasingly polarised world, Singapore is proof that different communities can not only coexist, but thrive together.
Moving Forward Together
As we admire the beautiful lights tonight and enjoy the festivities, let us remember that this harmony we celebrate is not accidental. It is the result of conscious efforts, mutual respect, and the commitment of every Singaporean to our shared values.
We must continue to nurture this precious gift. Let us teach our children to see diversity not as difference that divides, but as richness that strengthens. Let us ensure that precincts like Geylang Serai continue to flourish as spaces where culture is not only preserved but celebrated.
Closing
To all our Muslim friends, I wish you a Blessed Ramadan. To all Singaporeans, let us continue to build and strengthen bridges of understanding and friendship across all communities.
Terima kasih. Thank you very much and have a great evening.
