Visit by PM Lee Hsien Loong to Bali, Indonesia, for the Singapore-Indonesia Leaders’ Retreat and ASEAN Leaders’ Gathering

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong will visit Bali, Indonesia, from 10 to 11 October 2018 to attend the Singapore-Indonesia Leaders’ Retreat and ASEAN Leaders’ gathering. Prime Minister Lee will also participate in a moderated dialogue with World Bank Group (WBG) President Jim Yong Kim at the WBG’s Third Annual Human Capital Summit.
The Leaders’ Retreat will be Prime Minister Lee’s third with Indonesian President Joko Widodo. It follows from the last Leaders’ Retreat held in Singapore on 7 September 2017, which commemorated the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Singapore and Indonesia. For the upcoming Retreat, Prime Minister Lee and President Joko Widodo will review the progress made in bilateral relations, and discuss ways to deepen cooperation. The Leaders will also exchange views on regional and international developments.
During the Leaders’ Retreat, Prime Minister Lee and President Joko Widodo will witness the signing of the Agreement between Singapore and Indonesia on the Promotion and Protection of Investments (Bilateral Investment Treaty); a Cultural Cooperation Programme for the Years 2019 to 2021 Concerning Cooperation in the Fields of Arts and Heritage between the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth and Indonesia’s Ministry of Education and Culture; and a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Financial Technology Cooperation between the Monetary Authority of Singapore and Indonesia’s Financial Services Authority. On the sidelines of the Retreat, several other MOUs will be signed, including: a MOU on the Cooperation for Development and Implementation of Industry 4.0 between Enterprise Singapore and the Indonesian Ministry of Industry’s Agency for Research and Development of Industry; a MOU on the Programme for Financial Technology Learning for Higher Education Providers between Ngee Ann Polytechnic and the Indonesian Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education’s Directorate General of Learning and Student Affairs; an extension of the MOU concerning Cooperation on Human Resources Development of the Government Officers in the Maritime Field between the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore and the Indonesian Ministry of Transportation’s Directorate General of Sea Transportation; and an MOU on Cruise Ships Calling at Various Ports in Indonesia between Genting Cruise Lines and PT Pelabuhan Indonesia III.
At the ASEAN Leaders’ gathering convened by Indonesia on the sidelines of the Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank Group, Prime Minister Lee, in Singapore’s capacity as the 2018 ASEAN Chair, will co-chair with President Joko Widodo discussions on the theme of “Achieving Sustainable Development Goals and Overcoming Development Gap through Regional and Global Collaborative Actions”. The gathering will involve ASEAN Leaders, as well as the heads of the United Nations, International Monetary Fund, and the World Bank Group.
Prime Minister Lee will be accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security Teo Chee Hean, Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen, Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Communications and Information and Minister-in-charge of Trade Relations S Iswaran, Minister for Finance Heng Swee Keat, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Grace Fu, Minister for Trade and Industry Chan Chun Sing, Minister for the Environment and Water Resources Masagos Zulkifli, and Minister for Education Ong Ye Kung.
During Prime Minister Lee’s absence, Minister for Home Affairs and Minister for Law K Shanmugam will be the Acting Prime Minister.
