Visit to Japan - Mar 2026
19 March 2026
Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Lawrence Wong visited Japan from 17 to 19 March 2026.
PM Wong met Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae, who also hosted him to a working dinner.
Both leaders marked 60 years of diplomatic ties and reaffirmed strong economic links, with both countries as top investors in each other. They agreed to deepen cooperation in green and digital sectors and strengthen supply chain resilience.
They underscored support for free trade, a rules-based order, and ASEAN centrality. Singapore will work with Japan to advance the ASEAN-Japan Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (CSP), including initiatives like the ASEAN Power Grid.
PM Wong and PM Takaichi announced the upgrade of Singapore-Japan relations to a Strategic Partnership. This provides a framework to deepen and expand bilateral cooperation in existing and forward-looking areas, which can serve as pathfinders for broader regional and international cooperation.
PM Wong also met former Prime Ministers Ishiba Shigeru, Kishida Fumio, Aso Taro, and LDP Secretary-General Suzuki Shunichi. He thanked them for their contributions to strengthening bilateral cooperation and deepening Japan’s engagement with the region. They also discussed regional and international affairs.
